First observations of SO2 from the satellite Suomi NPP OMPS:Widespread air pollution events over China

چکیده
[1] Severe smog episodes over China in January 2013 received worldwide attention. This air pollution was distinguished by heavy loadings of fine particulate matter and SO2. To characterize these episodes, we employed the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite, Nadir Mapper (OMPS NM), an ultraviolet (UV) spectrometer flying on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft since October 2011. We developed an advanced algorithm to quantify SO2 in the lower troposphere and achieved highquality retrievals from OMPS NM, which are characterized by high precision, 0.2 Dobson Units (DU; 1 DU = 2.69 1016 molecules/cm2) for instantaneous field of view SO2 data and low biases (within ̇0.2 DU). Here we report SO2 retrievals and UV aerosol index data for these pollution events. The SO2 columns and the areas covered by high pollutant concentrations are quantified; the results reveal for the first time the full extent (an area of 106 km2 containing up to 60 kt of SO2) of these episodes. Monitoring of SO2 column concentration over Iran using satellite-based observations during 2005-2016
For the first time, sulfur dioxide concentration was monitored between 2005 and 2016 over Iran which is among the countries with a high SO2 emission rate in the world. To that end, SO2 column concentration at Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was analyzed. OMI is a sensor onboard the Aura satellite which can measure daily SO2 concentration on the global scale...

متن کاملEffects of meteorological conditions on sulfur dioxide air pollution in the North China plain during winters of 2006-2015
The last decade has seen frequent occurrences of severe air pollution episodes of high loading in SO2 during winters in the North China Plain (NCP). Using satellite data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), chemistry transport model (GEOS-Chem) simulations, and National Center for Environmental Predication (NCEP) meteorological reanalysis, this study examines meteorological and synoptic ...

This paper presents results of measurements of tropospheric sulphur dioxide (SO2) from satellite over China during 2004e2009. SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT SO2 data products have been validated by ground based remote sensing instrument MAXDOAS in China, and with predictions of the atmospheric model GEOSeChem. The spatial and temporal distribution of tropospheric SO2 over China is discussed in this study. T...
